The Nairobi Convention Secretariat is pleased to share with you the draft documents of the final negotiations meetings which include: the text of the draft Protocol for the Protection of the Western Indian Ocean Marine and Coastal Environment from land-based sources and activities; as well as the text of the amended Nairobi Convention for the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Western Indian Ocean Region.

Welcome to the Nairobi Convention Discussion Forum

The discussion forum enables a two-way flow of information between the Contracting Parties, Stakeholders and the public on the sustainable development of the Western Indian Ocean Coastal and Marine environment.

The Nairobi Convention provides a mechanism for regional cooperation, coordination and collaborative actions, and enables the Contracting Parties to harness resources and expertise from a wide range of stakeholders and interest groups towards solving interlinked problems of the coastal and marine environment. The Nairobi Convention area extends from Somalia in the north to the Republic of South Africa, covering 10 States, five of which are island States in the Western Indian Ocean. The Contracting Parties are Comoros, France (La Reunion), Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, Tanzania and the Republic of South Africa. The Nairobi Convention Clearinghouse and information sharing system is designed to provide a one-stop mechanism that promotes the advertising, discovery, access, dissemination and use of the increasingly diverse and comprehensive data using the decentralized capabilities of the Internet. Through a clearinghouse and a Web interface, the system provides an integration of information held by numerous departments, institutions and organizations in order to deal with the vast array of policy, management, scientific and other practical issues of the coastal and marine environment.
